There are lots of ways to find a job. If you’re interested in working at a certain organization, you can check their website for open positions. You might also hear about an opportunity from someone you know. Other times you have to go find a job that fits your interests, needs, and schedule.

 

Here are some tips to help you have a successful job search–

  • Update your resume. Make sure it is professionally formated and free of errors
  • Have a teacher, counselor, or trusted adult proofread your resume
  • Make a digital copy of your resume to upload with your applications
  • After applying, wait three days then call the hiring manager and ask when you might hear back about your application

Employers often post open positions on a job board. Most job boards allow you to use filters to narrow your search so that you can find a job that’s the right fit for you. Explore these popular jobs boards to get started–

Indeed

Job board that allows you to search for jobs based on different criteria such as part time vs. full time remote jobs. Online jobs might be a great opportunity for college students with busy course loads to make money. This article lists some popular online job opportunities for college students.

Linkedin

Similar to Indeed, LinkedIn has a job board that allows you to search for job/internship opportunities. You are able to look for part-time or full-time positions and even find jobs/internships that are even remote! LinkedIn is also a platform that is used by professionals to network with one another and gives job-seekers a chance to connect with the employer.

USA Jobs

Similar to LinkedIn and Indeed, USA Jobs is a job-searching platform in which people are able to find jobs/internships; however, the difference with this is that it is all government-related jobs. This is especially useful for students for seek to pursue government-related jobs in the future.

Chicago-based Job Opportunities

After School Matters, Chicago

Teens 14 and older can apply for a variety of programs that support career exploration, and professional skill development. Programs often include hands-on learning opportunities, as well as mentorship and coaching.

WAGE: Participants earn a stipend based on attendance and/or program completion

Chicago Park District

Transitional Youth Leader (TYL) — Chicago Public Schools

Transitional Youth Leaders support CPS graduates in their post-secondary journey. Ideal candidates are outgoing, committed to learning and supporting peers, and have at least one year of experience on campus.

WAGE: $15 per hour

CRCP provides tuition assistance for package handlers at UPS in Hodgkins, IL

WAGE: $24 per hour + tuition assistance at a partner college/university and free public transportation to work (medical benefits, and paid vacation offered after 9 months)
