Massachusetts State Financial Aid Application

A step-by-step guide on how to apply for the Massachusetts State Financial Aid Application

What is the Massachusetts State Financial Aid Application (MASFA)?

MASFA is an application that allows undocumented students to access state financial aid at Massachusetts universities and colleges. If you’re planning to attend a public college or university in Massachusetts and are eligible for state financial assistance, then completing the MASFA can help you get the funding you need to make your educational goals a reality.

Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the MASFA:

Who’s Eligible?

The MASFA is designed for Massachusetts residents who are not eligible for federal financial aid. You are eligible to complete MASFA if you:

  • Attended high school in Massachusetts in at least three academic years (this can include partial years);

  • Earned a diploma or the equivalent (GED/HiSET) in Massachusetts; AND

  • Provided one of the following documents:

    • A valid Social Security Number (SSN),

    • A document reflecting the issuance of an individual taxpayer identification number,

    • A document of registration with selective service (if applicable), OR

    • Completed DHE Affidavit stating that you will file an application to become a citizen or legal permanent resident within 120 days after you become eligible to do so. You will submit this to the institutions you are applying to or attending.

When do I Apply?

2024-2025 Academic Year Application is currently open until June 30th, 2025.

2025-2026 Academic Year Application is currently open and should be completed by April 30 at the absolute latest so you can qualify for all Mass Grant related aid.

Apply as early as possible to ensure you meet any institutional deadlines and are eligible for the maximum amount of financial aid.

What Materials Do I Need?

Depending on your circumstances (such as whether you’re a dependent and the kind of tax form you used), you may need the following materials to complete MASFA:

Computer or Laptop

The application is not mobile-friendly. If you don’t have a computer or laptop, ask your school counselor or financial aid office for support.

MASFA Log-in Credentials

You’ll need to create an account and set up log-in credentials before you begin.

Financial Documents
  • Your and your parent’s tax returns from the prior year. For example, if you’re applying for the 2025-2026 MASFA, you will need your family’s 2024 tax documents (including the 1040 form and any W-2 forms).
  • Bank statements or other asset information, if applicable.
  • SSN or ITIN (If available. If you or your parents don’t have an SSN or ITIN, you can still complete the application).

Ready to Apply?

Follow these steps below to start your MASFA process:

01

Gather Your Documents

Before you start filling out the MASFA, you’ll need to have some important documents mentioned above on hand. These documents will help you provide accurate information on your application.

02

Create MASFA Account

Before you apply for MASFA, you must create an account on their website. Click “Sign Up,” then enter your information. Set up a username and password, then check your email for a verification link to activate your account. Once verified, you can log in and start your MASFA application. You can return anytime to check your status or make updates before the deadline.

03

Start the Application

Once you’re signed into your account, you’ll be able to fill out the application. The questions on the MASFA will ask for details about your income and assets and your parent’s income and assets, as well as your school and program information.

Tip: Take your time with each question. If you’re unsure about something, leave it blank and ask your OneGoal advisor for help. They can guide you through tricky questions and ensure you’re on the right track.

04

Review, Sign, and Submit
Once you’ve completed the application, review your answers to make sure everything is accurate. Small mistakes can delay your financial aid or affect your eligibility, so double-check your information carefully. When you are done, both you and your parent will need to electronically sign the MASFA, and then you can submit!

Tip: After reviewing, submit the MASFA application. You will receive a confirmation email with the details you submitted. Keep this email for your records.

05

Submit the Required Affidavit
After submitting the MASFA, Massachusetts state schools will ask for a signed affidavit that confirms your eligibility for state financial aid. This affidavit is a required document, so be sure to submit it to any schools you’re applying to as soon as possible. It’s a simple process, but failing to submit it on time could delay your financial aid award.

Tip: Check with each school’s financial aid office to make sure you’ve submitted everything they need. Your OneGoal advisor can help you navigate this step and ensure that you’re on top of it.

06

Follow Up
After submitting the MASFA and affidavit, your application will be processed. In some cases, you might be asked for additional information or verification, so keep an eye on your email and make sure you respond promptly.

Tip: Check the status of your application regularly and keep your OneGoal advisor updated. They can help you stay on top of any requests or follow-up actions you may need to take.
